Reports have suggested that Nagelsmann has decided to step down following Germany's disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving the national team searching for a new manager.
Klopp has regularly been linked with the Germany job over the years and is widely viewed as the ideal successor. However, securing his release may not be straightforward.
The former Liverpool manager is currently working as Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer after taking up the role earlier this year. His contract runs until 2029, meaning the German Football Association would need to reach an agreement with the company before he could take charge of the national team.
There have been claims that Klopp has an understanding which would allow him to leave if Germany approached him. However, according to reports from Bild, that agreement was made verbally rather than being included as a formal clause in his contract.
That could make negotiations more complicated, with Red Bull reportedly expected to seek compensation before allowing Klopp to leave.
The reported fee is believed to be in the region of several million euros. If the German Football Association agreed to pay the amount, it would represent a historic moment, as the governing body has never previously paid a transfer fee to appoint a national team coach.
Despite the potential financial hurdle, Klopp remains the overwhelming favourite for the position. His successful spells at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, where he won major domestic and European honours, have made him one of the most respected coaches in world football.
