The Red Devils, eager to rebuild after a disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League and a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, are pushing to bolster their attacking options under head coach Ruben Amorim.
The 25-year-old Cameroon international, who scored an impressive 20 goals and provided eight assists in 38 Premier League matches last season, has caught United's attention as a key target.
Brentford, however, value Mbeumo at over 60 million pounds, arguing he's a proven Premier League talent comparable to Matheus Cunha, who United recently signed from Wolves for 62.5 million pounds. With Mbeumo's contract entering its final year, though Brentford hold an option to extend it by 12 months—the Bees are in no rush to sell unless their valuation is met.
Brentford's head coach Thomas Frank has been clear about the high price tag. "If the right price, and that's going to be expensive, is coming, then I'm sure the club will be open to it," Frank said in May, as reported by Sky Sports.
This stance was reinforced when Brentford rebuffed United's opening bid of 45 million pounds plus 10 million pounds in add-ons, with negotiations ongoing as both clubs seek common ground.
Transfer expert Graeme Bailey offered optimism for United fans, stating, "There is full confidence of the deal going through. The player's camp is already in broad agreement over terms."
Bailey added that Brentford's valuation aligns with Cunha's, suggesting United may need to increase their offer by around 10 million pounds to seal the transfer.
Mbeumo's reported preference for Old Trafford over rivals like Arsenal, Newcastle, and Tottenham has further fueled United's determination.
The Red Devils' transfer activity comes amid a major squad overhaul, with Cunha's arrival already secured and speculation surrounding potential exits like Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, and Jadon Sancho.
Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright, speaking on his Wrighty's House podcast, backed Mbeumo's potential impact, saying, "If he goes to United and scores a couple very early doors, he will realise where he is because he goes to another level with the attention from United."
As talks progress, United's pursuit of Mbeumo signals their intent to restore their attacking firepower and climb back into contention. Brentford, however, remain firm, and with interest from Saudi clubs in Mbeumo's teammate Yoane Wissa potentially complicating matters, United must act swiftly to secure their man.
