Luka Modric bows out as Real Madrid legend after glorious era
Real Madrid have announced that captain Luka Modric will leave the club after the FIFA Club World Cup, starting 18 June in the United States, ending an iconic era.
The 28-year-old Brazilian, a key figure and one of the team's captains, will formalise the agreement at the Camp Nou offices on Thursday, ensuring his future with the club beyond the current deal, set to expire on 30 June 2027.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta, who has overseen the negotiations in recent weeks, will be present to seal the deal.
Raphinha's decision to stay comes despite lucrative offers from elsewhere, underlining his commitment to the Blaugrana cause. "Barcelona are my home, and I'm proud to continue this journey," Raphinha has said, as reported by sources close to the club.
His performances this season have been nothing short of exceptional, with 34 goals and 25 assists in all competitions, heading into the final La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao at San Mames on Sunday.
The extension is part of Barcelona's strategy to lock down their core players, following successful renewals earlier this year for Pedri, Pau Cubarsí, Inigo Martinez, Ronald Araujo, and Gerard Martin.
"We are building a squad for the future, and Raphinha is central to that vision," manager Hansi Flick has said. The club's sporting department are expected to continue their efforts to tie down other key players in the coming weeks, ensuring stability for Flick's ambitious project.
