Robert Lewandowski returns to Barcelona training ahead of Elche clash

The 37-year-old striker rejoined the group at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper on Monday, taking part in drills for the first time since suffering a muscle tear in his left thigh during the October international break.

His recovery has progressed faster than expected, initially projected to sideline him for a month, providing head coach Hansi Flick with some welcome relief following Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in El Clasico.

Barcelona's medical staff are continuing to monitor Lewandowski closely, managing his workload day by day. According to reports, the Polish forward's fitness levels have improved significantly and his "sensations are very positive," suggesting he could feature against Elche if he responds well to training throughout the week.

Flick, who has endured a mixed start to life in charge, expressed optimism about the striker's progress. "Robert is an important leader for us, both on and off the pitch," Flick has noted in recent comments on the forward's recovery. "His attitude has been excellent and having him back gives the team a lot of confidence."

Lewandowski's absence has been felt in recent weeks, with Barcelona struggling to turn possession into goals. Without their main number nine, the Catalans have lacked a clinical edge, managing only four goals in their last three league matches.

His return could prove decisive as Barcelona aim to bounce back from the El Clasico disappointment and keep pace in the title race as defending champions.

Elche, meanwhile, are winless in their last two matches and are facing mounting pressure near the bottom of the table after promotion.

If cleared to play, Lewandowski is expected to lead the line on Sunday, offering Barcelona the cutting edge they have been missing since his injury.
