Ruben Amorim: Winning the Europa League would not 'save' Man Utd's season

United's domestic campaign has been dismal. For the first time in the Premier League era, the club are set to finish outside the top ten.

Early exits in both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup further compounded their woes, piling pressure on Amorim in his first season at the helm.

However, European competition has offered a rare bright spot. United reached the Europa League semi-finals in remarkable fashion after a thrilling quarter-final against Lyon.

Despite surrendering a two-goal lead in the first half, and going behind in extra time, United produced an astonishing late comeback.

Goals from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and Harry Maguire within six frantic minutes sealed a 5-4 aggregate victory.

Their semi-final tie against Athletic Club begins on Thursday, with the return leg scheduled for the following week.

"Everyone knows this is really important for our season," said Amorim.

"Nothing will 'save' our season but this can be huge. Winning a trophy and getting in the Champions League next year can change a lot of things, even in the summer."
