Rulani Mokwena blames Bafana Bafana's early AFCON exit on squad choice

Rulani Mokwena blames Bafana Bafana's early AFCON exit on squad choice

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach believes that squad selection and preparation played a major role in the team's last-16 defeat to Cameroon, and says the team did not play to its full potential.

"The matches are a reflection of a lot of preparation and planning. Personally, I believe that for a competition like AFCON, our best players must be available and in top form. I don't think that was the case this time around," said Mokwena on SNAWA on Metro FM.

"It's difficult to comment because I don't think the squad's performance truly shows what we are capable of doing. We can represent ourselves much better at this level."

Mokwena also contrasted this campaign with previous tournaments, noting that expectations and pressure play a key role in outcomes.

"In past AFCONs, we went without too much pressure. This time, there were high expectations, and when that happens, you need all your weapons. I don't think we were fully prepared for that," he stated.

Mokwena was careful to frame his comments as personal opinions and praised head coach Hugo Broos for his work with the team.

"These are just my thoughts. I don't usually voice opinions on these matters because Hugo Broos has done incredible work, though there are things I might see differently," he added.

Bafana Bafana now face questions about squad depth and preparation as they look ahead to rebuilding for the next international campaign.
