Ryan Gravenberch eyes 'bigger influence' in new Liverpool era

The Netherlands international has rejoined the squad on their pre-season tour of the United States after helping his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Following a three-week break with his family, Gravenberch said he has returned refreshed and eager for the new campaign.

"I had three weeks and spent it with my family," Gravenberch said. "I enjoyed the holidays and I'm recharged now."

The 24-year-old admitted he completely switched off from football during his time away after a demanding season that included international duty.

"It was a long season, also with the World Cup," he said. "I just wanted to enjoy my holiday and when it was time to come back, I was ready."

Liverpool begin a new chapter under Iraola, who replaces Arne Slot, and Gravenberch is excited by what the Spaniard can bring to the club.

"I'm really looking forward to it," he said. "The principles he has, the intensity he wants to play with and what he achieved with his previous club were really impressive. I'm excited to see what he will bring to the team."

Gravenberch praised the work Iraola did at Bournemouth, saying Liverpool always found matches against them difficult.

"He did a really good job there," he said. "Whenever we played Bournemouth it was always a tough game, so hopefully he can do the same here."

The midfielder also revealed there is a positive atmosphere around the squad during the early stages of pre-season.

"Everyone is happy to be here," he said. "The players have told me the training sessions are intense but really enjoyable. Everyone is excited."

After an underwhelming campaign last season, Gravenberch believes the squad is determined to bounce back.

"We didn't do a great job last season," he admitted. "Everyone wants to show themselves and make this a much better season."

Personally, Gravenberch has set himself a clear target. After making more than three years' worth of appearances for Liverpool and gaining experience at the highest level, he wants to become one of the team's leaders.

"It goes so quickly. This is already my fourth season," he said. "Last season wasn't my best either and I want to show more this year. I want to be more of a leader for the team. That's my aim this season."

Although still only 24, Gravenberch feels his experience means he can help guide some of Liverpool's younger players.

"I'm still young, but I've played a lot of games at the highest level," he said. "Maybe I'm one of the more experienced players here."

Gravenberch is now hoping to get his first pre-season minutes when Liverpool face Wrexham at Yankee Stadium in New York on Thursday as the Reds continue their tour of the United States.
