Soweto Derby: Five takeaways from Kazier Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates clash

Thalente Mbatha stabilizes Bucs midfield

Bafana Bafana midfielder Thalente Mbatha returned to the starting line-up after recovering from injury, with his side having lost the last two matches without him.

His presence seemed to boost the visitors as they dominated the midfield battle, allowing few breaches towards the defence while launching attacks.

He was unlucky to have a goal ruled out during the match, but he showed that he is a pivotal member of the squad.

Mofokeng, Appollis and Moremi combo shines

The trio caused havoc for the Glamour Boys, creating numerous chances with some delicate through passes and crosses which led to goals and assists for the side.

Tshepang Moremi scored a deflected and put in a lovely cross for Evidence Makgopa's third goal, while Oswin Appollis finished from a defence splitting pass from Relebohile Mofokeng.

Rusty Miguel and Bvuma pay the price

Amakhosi made three defensive changes to the team that lost 2-1 to Stellenbosch in the midweek clash.

This proved to be costly as the defence failed to command their area as well as they have under captain Brandon Petersen, who was unavailable for the clash.

Inacio Miguel started his first league match since January, while goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma made his first appearance for the season, which may have led to the miscommunication in defence.

Chiefs goal scoring woes continue

The home side failed to trouble Orlando Pirates goalkeeper during the match, forcing him to make only three saves during the game with most threats occurring near the end of the fixture with the score at 3-0.

Chiefs have scored three goals in the last four league matches despite creating numerous chances in previous matches preceding the derby but failed to threaten the Buccaneers defence on Saturday.

Pirates continue derby winning streak

AmaBhakaniya extended their winning streak against Chiefs in the Betway Premiership to five matches, with the 3-0 drubbing the largest margin of defeat in this fixture since 2001/02.

Chiefs did beat Pirates in last year's Nedbank Cup final but have struggled to hold their own against their domestic rivals.

Amakhosi will have a chance to make amends when the two sides meet again in the Betway Premiership in April.
