Stellenbosch overpower Polokwane in Nedbank Cup clash

The match was marked by attacking play and a defensive masterclass from the home side.

From the onset, Stellenbosch were on the front foot. Early attempts by Genino Palace and Lesiba Nku were thwarted by the vigilant Polokwane goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga, but it was clear the pressure was mounting.

The deadlock was broken in the 13th minute when an unfortunate own goal by Polokwane's Bulelani Nikani gave Stellenbosch the lead.

Stellenbosch continued to dominate, with Devin Titus proving to be a constant threat.

Titus' persistence paid off in the 37th minute when he doubled the lead with a fine left-footed finish into the top right corner, assisted by Khomotjo Lekoloane.

This goal was a testament to the teamwork and fluid movements of the Stellenbosch attack.

Despite Polokwane City's efforts to claw back into the game, their shots were either off target or well-saved by the Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

Manuel Kambala had a couple of headers saved, while substitutes like Puleng Tlolane and Monty Batlhabane tried to inject some life into Polokwane's attack but to no avail.

The second half saw Stellenbosch continue their aggressive play, with players like Andre de Jong and Fawaaz Basadien coming close to adding to the scoreline.

Substitutions from both sides did little to change the course of the game, with Stellenbosch comfortably maintaining their lead.

The match ended with yellow cards for Polokwane's Puleng Tlolane and Stellenbosch's Sage Stephens, adding a bit of spice in the closing stages. However, the final whistle confirmed Stellenbosch's advancement to the next round of the Nedbank Cup, demonstrating their capability to blend youth and experience in a competitive setting.
