Stunning Maitland-Niles last-gasp Everton equaliser denies Man Utd three points

The deadline-day signing from Lyon appeared to have rescued a point that had looked beyond Everton when he collected the loose ball deep into added time and sent an unstoppable effort into the top corner, leaving Senne Lammens with no chance.

The late intervention capped a remarkable finale in which United twice moved ahead, only for Everton to respond each time.

Benjamin Sesko looked to have settled the contest in the 88th minute when he headed Luke Shaw's cross beyond Jordan Pickford. The goal came just five minutes after Tyrique George had levelled for Everton with a fierce strike at the near post.

Bryan Mbeumo had initially put United in front shortly after half-time, producing another moment of quality when he carried the ball into the Everton box before curling his shot past Pickford.

United had enjoyed much of the possession during a first half that produced few clear chances. Bruno Fernandes went closest for the visitors when his effort struck the crossbar, while Marcus Rashford also posed a threat from the left.

Everton, who have endured a difficult week following their transfer-window frustrations, gradually grew into the game. Thierno Barry headed over from Merlin Rohl's cross before Jarrad Branthwaite tested Lammens.

David Moyes turned to his substitutes in the second half, with Jack Grealish and Hayden Hackney introduced as Everton searched for a response. Hackney subsequently played a key role in the equaliser, setting up George to fire into the roof of the net.

United regained the lead through Sesko and appeared destined to claim their first away victory of the season. Instead, Everton refused to accept defeat.

With virtually the final kick, Hackney's pull-back was only partially cleared and Maitland-Niles reacted first, curling a superb effort into the top-left corner to send the home crowd into bedlam.

The result preserves Everton's unbeaten start to the season and provides a welcome lift after a turbulent few days, while United were left to rue surrendering a winning position for the second time in the match.
