Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs saves three penalties in shootout win over Everton

Everton, missing key players through injury, suspension, and international duty, looked set to avoid an upset until 19-year-old debutant Adam Aznou drew a soft penalty in the 86th minute, allowing James Garner to level the match in the 89th.

Sunderland had taken the lead through Enzo Le Fee, whose first-half volley curled past Jordan Pickford after Everton failed to deal with a long throw. The promoted side dominated much of the first half and could have been further ahead at halftime.

Extra time offered little for Everton, and Roefs' shootout heroics proved decisive. He denied Garner, Thierno Barry, and Beto, while Le Fee, Granit Xhaka, and Luke O'Nien converted their penalties, with O'Nien scoring the decisive spot-kick to seal a memorable win.

For Everton, the defeat exposed the limits of a threadbare squad. Moyes' bench included mostly inexperienced players, with five academy players making their senior debuts. Injuries and suspensions-including Keane, Grealish, and Iroegbunam - left the squad stretched.

Sunderland's victory highlighted their depth and composure. Manager Regis Le Bris made five changes while retaining quality reserves like Dan Ballard, Brian Brobbey, Omar Alderete, and Wilson Isidor. The result extends Sunderland's strong start to the season, while Everton face the disappointment of an early FA Cup exit despite a seemingly strong lineup.
