Teboho Mokoena penalty keeps Bafana Bafana's World Cup hopes alive in Czechia draw

It was a battling performance from Bafana, who responded well after a disappointing opening defeat to Mexico. Reduced by suspensions and facing another early setback, Broos' side showed resilience to stay in the fight and earn a point in Atlanta.

Both sides entered the contest under pressure after losing their opening matches, but it was Czechia who made the brighter start and were rewarded with an early goal.

Adam Hlozek kept the ball in play near the byline before pulling it back for Alexandr Sojka, who cleverly set up Michal Sadilek to fire past Ronwen Williams and give the Europeans the lead.

South Africa, missing two players following red cards in their opening defeat to Mexico, struggled to match the Czech intensity during the first half. Although Bafana Bafana gradually enjoyed more possession, they found it difficult to create clear opportunities and were often frustrated by Czechia's aggressive pressing game.

The Czech side threatened again after the break. Vladimir Darida saw an effort blocked by Ime Okon, while Patrik Schick headed straight at Williams as South Africa continued to search for a way back into the match.

Their first meaningful effort arrived with 20 minutes remaining when Evidence Makgopa forced a routine save from goalkeeper Matej Kovar. That chance sparked new energy in the South African side, and they were soon handed a lifeline when Pavel Sulc was penalised for handling the ball inside the area.

Teboho Mokoena stepped up confidently and powered his penalty into the bottom-left corner to level the score and ignite Bafana Bafana's hopes.

Both teams pushed for a winner during the closing stages, with Lukas Provod coming closest for Czechia when he fired narrowly wide. However, neither side could find the decisive breakthrough.

The draw leaves Group A finely balanced. South Africa must now win their final match if they are to reach the knockout rounds, while Czechia face the same challenge as they chase a place in the last 16.

In their next Group A matches, South Africa will face South Korea and the Czech Republic will play co-hosts Mexico, with both decisive matches scheduled for Wednesday, 24 June.
