Tottenham winger Xavi Simons starts recovery fight after ACL injury

The 23-year-old Netherlands international damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Spurs' 1-0 Premier League win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. Simons was stretchered off in the second half, with fears immediately growing over the severity of the injury.

Tottenham Hotspur later confirmed the worst in an official statement.

The club said: "We can confirm that Xavi Simons has ruptured the Anterior Cruciate Ligament in his right knee. Xavi will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team."

Tottenham also pledged their support to the Dutch attacker throughout his recovery.

Despite the major setback, Simons has already shown signs of determination. Just days after the injury, he posted photos of himself training in the gym on Snapchat alongside the message: "No matter what!"

The injury is expected to sideline Simons for up to eight months, ruling him out of the upcoming 2026 World Cup with the Netherlands.

The forward admitted the news had left him devastated. In an emotional Instagram message, Simons wrote: "They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way. My season has come to an abrupt end and I'm just trying to process it."

He added: "Honestly, I'm heartbroken. All I've wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me, along with the World Cup."

Simons also promised supporters he would return stronger, saying he would continue his recovery "with strength, resilience and belief".

Tottenham's injury problems continue to grow during a difficult season. Cristian Romero is also sidelined with a knee injury, while Wilson Odobert faces a lengthy absence after suffering an ACL injury of his own.

Spurs remain locked in a battle near the bottom of the table, increasing the pressure on the remaining squad during the closing weeks of the campaign.
