He made the comments just as focus shifts to the Super-4 competition involving clubs promoted from the Nigerian National League (NNL).
According to Sport247 Nigeria, the ex-Super Eagles striker, who rose to prominence during his time with AS Monaco and Borussia Dortmund, believes the country's football future hinges on the proper development of its local leagues.
Speaking on the significance of the NNL, Ikpeba described it as a crucial link between grassroots football and the top-flight Nigeria Professional Football League, stressing that both levels require increased support and visibility.
"The Prince of Monaco" also looked back on his early playing days with Eko Hotel FC, where he began his journey in the Lagos State Football Association League.
He noted that the strong emphasis placed on regional competitions at the time motivated young players to dream of representing the national team.
"I started in the Lagos State Football Association League. Emphasis should be given to domestic football. It's very essential for the growth of football in Nigeria," Ikpeba said.
"It should not be about the Super Eagles only, but about domestic football. If we can get it right, we can produce stars for the future."
