Victor Osimhen leads Super Eagles' redemption mission against DR Congo

Following his match-winning brace in extra time against Gabon, Osimhen has become the focal point of Nigeria's push to return to the FIFA World Cup.

The 26-year-old continues to impress despite wearing a protective mask after a severe facial injury sustained four years ago. Against Gabon, Osimhen repeatedly threatened the goal and could easily have scored more goals having missed his best chance of the game in the last minutes of regular time.

"I was gutted after missing that one chance. I apologised to my teammates, promised to find the net in extra time, and I did twice," he admitted via Channels TV.

Osimhen's form has been pivotal throughout Nigeria's campaign. Last month, he scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 rout of Benin, helping the Super Eagles secure a play-off berth. Now, with DR Congo - who narrowly defeated Cameroon 1-0 - standing in their way, the stakes could not be higher.

Nigeria, historically six-time World Cup qualifiers, are desperate to avoid repeating the heartbreak of missing Qatar 2022.

Coach Eric Chelle has stressed the importance of focus and mentality ahead of the final hurdle.

"The victory over Gabon means nothing now. DR Congo are a tough, organised side. We need passion and teamwork again if we want to succeed," said Chelle.

With Osimhen leading the attack, Nigeria aim to combine individual brilliance with collective resolve to secure World Cup qualification.
