Villarreal stun Real Sociedad in first-half to go third in La Liga

The hosts wasted no time stamping their authority on the match. Club talisman Gerard Moreno opened the scoring inside nine minutes, rising to meet a clever near-post flick and guide his header home for his eighth league goal of the campaign.

Moreno remained at the heart of everything dangerous. His effort soon led to Villarreal's second, with Georges Mikautadze reacting quickest to a loose ball to finish from close range. Confidence surged through the home side, and they struck again on the counter, as Nicolas Pepe drove forward and fired in a deflected effort to make it three before the break.

Despite the dominant scoreline, Villarreal were forced to stay alert. Goalkeeper Luiz Junior denied Mikel Oyarzabal in a crucial one-on-one just before half-time, preserving their advantage.

Sociedad responded after the restart when Luka Sucic capitalised on a defensive lapse to pull one back, but any hopes of a comeback faded when a late effort was ruled out for offside.

Speaking afterwards, Marcelino reflected on his side's performance: "I don't know if it was our best match, but it was very good. To reach 58 points, you have to play many good games. It's no coincidence."

He added: "I fully agree the result was narrow considering our attacking play. I'm proud and grateful to the players. If we had been more clinical, we would have won by a big margin, which is what the team deserved."

The result lifted Villarreal into third place, strengthening their push for Champions League qualification. Marcelino acknowledged the significance but remained focused: "There are nine matches left. We've taken an important step. We'll go game by game and try to maintain this winning mentality."
