In an interview with the club following Bayern’s title-clinching win last week, Kompany, who is in his first season in charge at the Allianz Arena, described the unrelenting mental demands of top-level management and the constant pressure to prepare for the next match.
"Sleep, really sleep," Kompany responded when asked what he was most looking forward to following Bayern’s domestic triumph. "You constantly have the pressure of the next game. You achieve something, but then you have to start building for the next achievement."
It has been a challenging campaign for Bayern and their new manager. The club faced fierce domestic competition from defending champions Bayer Leverkusen, who not only kept pace with Bayern for much of the season but also eliminated them from the DFB-Pokal. Bayern’s European ambitions were similarly cut short, with a Champions League quarterfinal defeat to Inter Milan.
Kompany acknowledged that the intensity of the season often made it difficult to fully enjoy personal moments away from the pitch.
"There are moments with the family during the year, but your head is somewhere else," he said. "Now, in the next few weeks, I will leave some of that behind. But you can only do that after winning."
Despite the setbacks in cup competitions, the league title marks a successful debut season in Germany for the former Manchester City captain. As Bayern look ahead to the future under Kompany’s leadership, the manager himself is simply looking forward to some well-earned rest.
