Bayern Munich win record 33rd Bundesliga title after Leverkusen drop points

Leverkusen entered the match knowing that only a victory would preserve their slim hopes of contesting the title, especially after Bayern's 3-3 draw with RB Leipzig on Saturday.

However, the visitors failed to rise to the occasion in Freiburg, where the home side, still in pursuit of a Champions League qualification berth, displayed greater urgency and cohesion.

Freiburg opened the scoring shortly before halftime through Maximilian Eggestein, whose effort took a slight deflection on its way past the goalkeeper. The hosts doubled their lead just minutes after the break, when Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie inadvertently turned the ball into his own net during a chaotic sequence in front of goal.

Although Leverkusen mounted a late resurgence - Florian Wirtz reducing the deficit with an impressive solo goal in the 82nd minute and Jonathan Tah equalising during stoppage time - they were unable to complete the comeback. The result, while preserving their record of 33 consecutive Bundesliga away matches without defeat, nonetheless confirmed Bayern's status as champions for the eleventh consecutive season.

Bayern now sit atop the table with 76 points, eight clear of Leverkusen, who remain second on 68 points. The title is Bayern's 33rd in the Bundesliga era, which began in 1963.

Following the match, Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso acknowledged Bayern's superiority. "Congratulations to Bayern - their consistency and quality throughout the season make this a well-deserved title," he said. "After Florian Wirtz's goal, we believed a comeback was possible, and Jonathan Tah gave us a chance. But ultimately, we fell short."

Bayern players and staff, who had convened in Munich to watch the outcome of Leverkusen's fixture, celebrated their latest triumph together. The team will officially be presented with the Bundesliga trophy next Saturday during their final home match of the season against Borussia Monchengladbach.
