'We are confident and focused on winning', explains Bafana boss Hugo Broos ahead of Egypt clash

South Africa got their 2025 AFCON underway with a 2-1 win over Angola as the Pharaohs saw off Zimbabwe 2-1.

While Bafana have just one continental title to their name, Egypt hold the record for the most tournament wins.

But Broos' side are on a 26 match unbeaten run and head into the clash full of confidence.

Speaking ahead of the game, Broos preached caution while insisting it is not only star players Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush - who both scored in their AFCON opener - that Bafana need to be wary of.

"We all know what kind of team Egypt is," Broos said in the Citizen. "They are seven-time AFCON winners with amazing players like (Mohamed) Salah and (Omar) Marmoush. We know them well but we are confident and looking forward to playing the game tomorrow."

Broos added: "We're not focused on one player, we're focused on the team, it would be a big mistake to focus on one individual of the Egyptian team, we all know how good Salah is, we all know how good Marmoush is – we all know how good Trezeguet is, it's such a good team.

"If we focus on one player? We're not prepared to beat a team and not say 'oh Salah or Marmoush didn't play good in the game', for us it's just to focus on beating the team [Egypt]."

Reflecting on his side's start to AFCON, taking place in Morocco, the head coach explained: "It was very important to win the first game.

"We didn't want to be in a situation where we started the Egypt game with a knife at our throats, having to win.

"That doesn't mean we don't want to win. If we win – it is the same for Egypt – we qualify for the next round. So it is a very important match for both of us. If we could win it would be a very good thing for us to play our last game against Zimbabwe without pressure."
