Why Sipho Mbule looks revitalised in a deeper midfield role at Orlando Pirates

Mokoena argues that the position allows the gifted playmaker the time and space to dictate matches.

Mbule endured a slow start to 2026 following the Africa Cup of Nations break, missing Pirates' matchday squads for three consecutive fixtures.

The 27-year-old eventually made his first appearance of the year in the Buccaneers' emphatic 4-1 Nedbank Cup Round of 32 victory over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, before featuring again in the 3-0 league win against Marumo Gallants.

While the Bethlehem-born midfielder secured his AFCON selection with Bafana Bafana operating as a traditional number 10, Pirates have recently introduced him in a deeper number eight role. The tactical shift immediately paid dividends.

In both appearances, Mbule made an instant impact off the bench. Against TTM, he capped an impressive cameo with a powerful strike from outside the box, registering his first goal in Pirates colours and underlining his growing influence from deeper areas.

Speaking on the Soccer Beat, Mokoena suggested the positional change could be key to unlocking Mbule's consistency.

"We've been talking about the MasterChef's position," said Mokoena. "A lot of people feel he's better suited as a six or an eight. That's where he's more involved in the build-up and can quickly release the attackers."

Mokoena explained that operating deeper allows Mbule to control the tempo and bring players such as Oswin Appollis and Relebohile Mofokeng into dangerous spaces.

"When he plays there, he's more composed. He gets the ball, waits for the team to move, joins in, and then plays those decisive passes," he added.

"Coming off the bench in the second half, he can be a key figure for Orlando Pirates, especially when it comes to game management."

The recent performances suggest Mbule's evolving role could prove crucial as Pirates balance domestic ambitions with knockout football in the business end of the season.
