According to Sportswire, the Cape Winelands club's new head coach Gavin Hunt is keen to strengthen his attacking department and is exploring the possibility of signing Mabasa on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Mabasa's reduced role at Pirates has become increasingly evident following the appointment of Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
The striker has slipped down the pecking order, with Evidence Makgopa and Yanela Mbuthuma both preferred ahead of him in recent weeks.
Although the 29-year-old is currently with the Pirates squad in Rustenburg as preparations continue for the second half of the season, he has not featured in the team's last eight matches across all competitions.
This run includes their Carling Knockout Cup final triumph over Marumo Gallants earlier this month.
Speculation surrounding Mabasa's future intensified in December 2025 when he removed Orlando Pirates from his Instagram bio. Despite being the club's second all-time leading goal scorer, the forward appears to be outside Ouaddou's immediate plans.
A temporary move would not be unfamiliar territory for Mabasa. He spent the first half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Moroka Swallows before being recalled by the Buccaneers midway through the campaign.
The decision proved fruitful, as Mabasa went on to claim the PSL Golden Shoe award that season after netting 16 goals - six for Swallows and 10 for Pirates.
Should a move to Stellies happen, Mabasa would become Hunt's first signing since joining the club.
