World Cup: Bafana legends throw weight behind number 10 Relebohile Mofokeng

The Orlando Pirates winger has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign, playing a central role in the club's historic domestic treble and establishing himself as a key attacking outlet. His performances have not only earned him individual acclaim but also elevated him into the national spotlight as one of the faces of South Africa's next generation.

At just 21, Mofokeng now carries significant attention heading into the tournament, with former players and analysts widely debating how he will cope with the demands of the international stage.

Letsholonyane, who played for South Africa at the 2010 World Cup on home soil, believes the youngster's ability to thrive will depend as much on the environment around him as his individual quality, stressing the importance of leadership within the squad as South Africa prepares for a challenging opener.

"For Rele, expectations are very high," Letsholonyane said. "He's done well for his team and I feel that he still has a lot to do, especially in the national team."

Letsholonyane pointed to the responsibility of senior figures such as Teboho Mokoena, Khuliso Mudau and captain Ronwen Williams in helping shield younger squad members from the pressures of tournament football, alongside emerging players like Ime Okon and Mbekezeli Mbokazi who are also adapting to the international stage.

Central to that support structure, he added, is the presence of veteran midfielder Themba Zwane, whose influence in the dressing room extends beyond his minutes on the pitch.

"You have someone like Mshishi, who will guide them, whether he starts or not," Letsholonyane said. "Players love to be around him. He is a good person and he wants to see others thrive."

Pienaar, who wore Mofokeng's number 10 jersey at the 2010 World Cup, also weighed in on Mofokeng's rapid rise, urging caution around expectations while acknowledging the youngster's high ceiling.

"Rele has all the attributes to become one of the best players in South Africa," Pienaar said. "We have to be careful how we treat him and not overload him with compliments."

Pienaar stressed the need for balance as the teenager prepares for his first major international tournament, encouraging freedom within a supportive structure.

"We must unleash him. He is fearless and must just get out there and play football," he added.

As Bafana Bafana finalise preparations for their clash with Mexico, Mofokeng is expected to feature prominently as South Africa look to inject pace and creativity into their attack. While the pressure surrounding his name continues to grow, there is a clear sense that his development will be shaped by the experienced core around him as much as his own talent.
