Wrexham's Arthur Okonkwo eyes Super Eagles switch

Wrexham's Arthur Okonkwo eyes Super Eagles switch

The 24‑year‑old marked a big club milestone recently by making his 100th league appearance for Wrexham in their 2-1 win over Portsmouth.

Manager Phil Parkinson has been full of praise for Okonkwo's development. Parkinson said after the Portsmouth match: "Arthur's a very influential signing for us when we first brought him in, he's always come back and responded really well. He's a young goalkeeper improving all the time."

Okonkwo has been a key part of Wrexham's Championship campaign this season, stepping in after team mate Danny Ward suffered an elbow injury and then keeping his place through consistent performances. Stats from the season show he has been one of the club's top performers in goal.

Off the pitch, there has been talk about Okonkwo's international future. Born in England to Nigerian parents, he played for England in youth teams but had not yet played for the senior national side.

Recent reports differ on his status: some outlets say FIFA has now approved his switch of international allegiance to Nigeria, making him officially eligible for the Super Eagles, while others quote the Nigeria Football Federation saying the process is still ongoing and not yet formally complete.

If Okonkwo's switch is confirmed, it could shake up Nigeria's goalkeeping options. With veteran Stanley Nwabali currently without a club, Nigerian press have suggested Okonkwo could challenge for the Super Eagles' number one spot when the squad meets for fixtures in late March, including matches against Iran and Jordan in Amman.

For now, Okonkwo remains focused on his club form and continuing his development at Wrexham, where his progress is clear and his stock continues to rise among fans and pundits alike.
