Xabi Alonso eager to get stuck in as new Chelsea boss

The Spaniard, who is due to officially begin work on July 1, insisted he is fully convinced by the direction Chelsea are taking despite the absence of Champions League football next season.

Alonso dismissed concerns surrounding Chelsea's failure to qualify for Europe's top competition. The 44-year-old instead pointed to the club's wider ambitions and future planning as key reasons behind his decision to take the role.

Asked if Chelsea's lack of European football was a stumbling block, he told Spanish television programme El Chiringuito: "No, I was always open to it, and, well, it's a beautiful project. Chelsea is a nice project, it's a very good option."

Chelsea's hierarchy view Alonso's appointment as a major statement after a difficult period for the club, with criticism from pundits and rival supporters focusing on inconsistent performances and missing out on Champions League qualification.

Despite that scrutiny, preparations for the new campaign are already underway behind the scenes as Chelsea plan a significant summer rebuild.

Alonso is expected to play a major role in the club's transfer business, particularly as Chelsea attempt to improve the balance of the squad.

Reports have linked Joao Pedro with a potential 100-million-euro move to Barcelona, while Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella have both attracted interest from elsewhere. Alonso, however, reportedly wants both players to remain in west London.
