Joel Dahmen eyes FedEx Cup Playoffs after grabbing Wyndham Championship lead
Joel Dahmen surged to the top of the leaderboard with a blistering nine-under-par 61 on Thursday to grab the first-round lead at the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship.
Young was bogey-free with seven birdies through 15 holes, reaching 14-under-par, one stroke ahead of defending champion Aaron Rai of England, who sat at 13-under with five holes left.
Rai, who endured a marathon Sunday en route to victory last year after multiple weather delays, expressed hope that play would get back on track when action resumes Saturday.
Thunderstorms forced a second stoppage on Friday afternoon before officials called off play for the day.
"Sometimes it's a nice way just to reset and refresh and go into tomorrow with a new mindset," Rai said. "And obviously there's a positive of just keeping the momentum going if the delay doesn't happen, but you've got to make the best of whatever situation comes your way, really."
Mac Meissner and South Korea's Im Sung-jae led in the clubhouse at 12-under 128. Meissner carded a seven-under 63 with eight birdies, while Im posted a six-under 64, highlighted by an eagle and four birdies.
The Wyndham Championship is the final event of the PGA Tour regular season, with the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings advancing to next week's St. Jude Championship, the first leg of the playoffs.
