Hideki Matsuyama tops congested Phoenix Open leaderboard
Hideki Matsuyama will take a slender one-stroke lead into the final round of the Phoenix Open on Sunday.

The American had no business being at the hunt for Sunday silverware, but Gotterup fired a sizzling seven under 64 to finish 16 under for the tournament, in with a chance at tying third round leader Matsuyama. Unfortunately for the Japanese, he yoinked his drive on the 18th into the fairway bunker, hit his second into the greenside bunker and failed to get up and down in two, forcing a playoff.
It went from bad to worse for Matsuyama in the playoff, as he pulled his drive even further left, this time landing in the water. His third went on the green, but consistent Gotterup picked up his red-hot putter and drained a 27-footer for birdie and the victory in front of the boisterous TPC Scottsdale gallery.
"You never know what to expect," quipped Gotterup afterwards.
"We went over to the first tee, hit a couple balls, was watching, and then all of a sudden you're out there on 18 and everyone is going nuts and you're like, all right, this is it."
Meanwhile, Matsuyama lamented the fact that he was even in a playoff to begin with.
"I wanted to avoid the playoff as much as I could, but I just hit a bad tee shot there in regulation at 18," Matsuyama said through an interpreter.
The victory marks Gotterup's third PGA Tour title in the last eight months and takes him to a career high ranking of fifth.
Further down the field, world number one Scottie Scheffler was on the charge on Sunday. His closing 64 saw him finish in T3, just one stroke behind the leaders despite starting the day seven shots off the pace.
"I played pretty well - only one round where I didn't have my best stuff," said the American star.
"If I get in the house the first day with a couple under par it's a little different story today."
