"I wouldn't bet against us," says LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil

"I wouldn't bet against us," says LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund pulled the plug on the league, casting major doubt about its future. But two weeks ago, O'Neil revealed that an agreement had been reached with a new investor - reportedly Ted Goldthorpe of BC Partners - that could keep the league afloat for another year.

"We have work to do," O'Neil told ESPN ahead of the league's season finale in Indianapolis.

"There are hurdles we have to jump over. It's a very complex transaction we'll have to deliver. But man, I wouldn't bet against us.

"The entirety of our focus is to get to this transaction and get through it. Without the players, that becomes very difficult. I have a good level of confidence in my conversation that we'll have a critical mass of the right players to move this league forward.

"The whole focus is on transaction, transaction, transaction. We're spending all our time thinking about how we best land this plane and have it landed so we can take off again."

O'Neil also continued his call for cooperation among golf leagues. The breakaway tour was met with plenty of hostility on launch in 2022, but perhaps its continued functioning  - and its move to a 72-hole format - has revealed that it can live in professional golf's ecosystem.

"Golf certainly doesn't need another five years of fighting," continued O'Neil.

"Golf doesn't need one tour to win and everyone else to lose. We shouldn't live in a world where one group of golfers is uniquely restricted from playing elsewhere. Our goal isn't to replace or restrict any tour."

But whatever happens, LIV Golf needs it to happen fast. The season has been cut short due to the financial constraints and contracts for big-name players such as Bryson DeChambeau effectively end this weekend after the Indianapolis finale.
