Sami Valimaki makes history as first Finn to win on PGA Tour at RSM Classic
Sami Valimaki capped the PGA Tour season in style on Sunday, becoming the first Finnish player to win on tour with victory at the RSM Classic in St. Simons Island, Georgia.

All three sit at 10 under par following the opening day at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia. Ghim played the par-70 Seaside Course and flirted with a historic 59, finishing with a 60 thanks to a late string of birdies. Thompson and Hoey, starting on the par-72 Plantation Course, both carded bogey-free 62s.
The trio holds a one-stroke advantage over Andrew Putnam and Andrew Novak, who each posted 9-under 61s at the Seaside Course. Players will complete one round at each course before the 36-hole cut.
Ghim, chasing his first PGA Tour victory, recorded five birdies on each nine, including a four-birdie streak from Nos. 14-17. A 13-foot birdie at the par-3 17th left him just one shy of 59, but a 20-foot putt on the final hole narrowly missed, sealing his 60.
"It was pretty clear that it was going to move right early," Ghim said.
"It was a downhill putt so you do have to acknowledge the first part of the putt more so than an uphill one. We were debating on whether or not it would break back to the left at the end. We thought because it was breaking so hard early that it might not get the chance to actually make its way left, but that's what it did, that's what it ended up doing.
"Again, pleased with the putt. It's easy to leave that putt short in that moment."
This RSM Classic is the final official event of 2025 and the last chance for players to crack the top 100 in the FedEx Cup points race, securing full PGA Tour status for 2026. Doug Ghim (No. 125) and Andrew Putnam (No. 119) are among those who could boost their standing with a strong finish.
"I've had a lot of tough weekends, a lot of missed cuts by one," Ghim said. "Didn't putt well for most of the year. Starting to putt better, which is in one way frustrating because obviously there's not a lot of tournaments left in the season with this being the last one, but at the same time it's better late than never. Excited for the opportunity to continue to put myself in the position to have a chance this week."
Michael Thorbjornsen, Max McGreevy, Quade Cummins, Matthew Riedel, and Canada’s Ben Silverman are all tied at 8 under, having kicked off the day on the Plantation Course.
