Hugo carded a third round five under 67 around the Country Club of Jackson on Saturday, enough to move him to 18 under for the tournament and keep his two-shot cushion at the top of the leaderboard. American duo Danny Walker and Steven Fisk are tied for second on 16 under.
"I'd say it was quite a good fight," said the Stellenbosch native, who rolled in six birdies and a bogey on the par five 5th.
"I knew it wasn't going to be easy. I mean, it's never easy. Golf never really goes your way. I just stayed patient and tried to put good swings on it and tried to roll the ball as good as I can.
"I seem to be playing well. I think all of us always try and stay patient. Some weeks it's easier than other weeks.
"I'm going to play as if I'm behind tomorrow and be as aggressive as I can be and make as many birdies as I can."
In pursuit of Higgo and PGA Tour title, Walker is keeping his head down.
"Just more play like I've done the last three days," said Walker.
"It's hard to say with what Garrick does. He could run away. Nothing I can do about that. If I just keep playing like I am and maybe have one or two less mistakes, I think that would take care of it."
PGA Tour veteran Matt Kuchar is enjoying himself in Jackson as his seven-under 65 moved him into T5, four shots off the pace.
