Two-time major winner Dustin Johnson to miss The Open for first time since 2009

Two-time major winner Dustin Johnson to miss The Open for first time since 2009

The 42-year-old, a winner of the 2016 US Open and 2020 Masters, had entered final qualifying at Dundonald Links in a bid to secure one of five available spots for next month’s tournament at Royal Birkdale.

However, he was removed from the entry list without explanation.

Johnson has never won the Open, with his best finish coming in 2011 when he finished tied second. He has also struggled for consistency in recent majors, recording just one top-20 finish in his last 15 appearances, although he did make the cut in all three of his major starts this year.

The withdrawal ends a run of 38 consecutive major championship appearances, stretching back to the 2017 Masters, marking the first time the former world No 1 will miss a major in nearly a decade.

The Open Championship gets underway on 16 July.
