AmaZulu's Liam Bern relieved to put Cape Town Spurs drama behind him

AmaZulu's Liam Bern relieved to put Cape Town Spurs drama behind him

The 22-year-old, widely regarded as a promising talent, made his long-awaited debut in the club's 2-0 league victory over Siwelele at Moses Mabhida Stadium, delivering an assured and energetic performance after months of uncertainty.

Bern signed for AmaZulu nearly four months ago but was unable to register with the club because Cape Town Spurs, his former side, withheld his clearance.

The situation stemmed from a legal wrangle in which he challenged Spurs' stance following their relegation to the third tier. The PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber eventually ruled that Bern was a free agent, but Spurs appealed the decision, prolonging the impasse.

The midfielder, who hails from Cape Town, admitted the drawn-out case weighed heavily on him, affecting him mentally as he waited for the matter to be resolved.

However, he says he never felt alone. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the AmaZulu staff for their unwavering support throughout the ordeal, singling out head coach Arthur Zwane for his guidance and reassurance during the most taxing moments.

The deadlock was finally broken last week when Cape Town Spurs withdrew their appeal during SAFA arbitration, clearing the way for Bern to be registered in time for the clash against Siwelele.

"I won't lie, the case affected me mentally, but there were some great people here at AmaZulu such as the coach [Zwane], who really helped me. He constantly spoke with me and the conversations we had kept me positive," Bern stated.

"I am so overwhelmed... I am very, very happy. I have been looking at this club for a long time.

"What attracted me to AmaZulu is that they are a big club with a strong fanbase and they have done some great things in the past. AmaZulu are just a big happy family."
