Damian Willemse admits to nerves ahead of long-awaited Springbok return

The 26-year-old has not featured for the national side since the 2023 Rugby World Cup final, having battled injury and suspension in the time since. Now fully fit, Willemse has been handed the No. 15 jersey and returns to a familiar role at fullback.

"I'm very happy to be healthy and back in the Springbok team," Willemse said at the team announcement. "It's been a difficult two years, but I'm grateful for another shot and for the coaches' belief in me."

Willemse will link up with wings Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse in a potent back three, with his positional versatility providing important depth given the limited backline cover on the bench - only Willie le Roux and Faf de Klerk feature among the replacements.

The 39-cap Springbok says he is leaning on his experience and the support of his teammates as he eases back into the Test environment.

"I haven't played since the World Cup final, so I'll need to settle early, do my primary job, and trust the guys around me. I know they'll look after me."

As for pre-match nerves, Willemse says they'll likely fade once the whistle blows.

"Once I'm out on the field, sing the anthem, and get my first touch, I'll settle in."

Saturday's clash offers Willemse a key opportunity to re-establish himself in the Springbok setup as the team begins preparations for the next World Cup cycle.
