Dave Rennie warns undefeated All Blacks of approaching Springbok storm

New Zealand have won all their matches on tour so far, defeating the Stormers (38-21), Sharks (54-0) and Bulls (50-19), but those franchises were all shorn of the majority of their Springboks.

A few internationals did feature in those games, but Rassie Erasmus has understandably held the majority of them back ahead of the internationals.

The All Blacks have shown some promising signs during their time in the Republic, but their improvement under Rennie will be put to the test when they face the back-to-back world champions.

"I thought we had a lot of opportunities to play on top of the Bulls and force defenders to make decisions and it was almost like we were training for the Springboks, who are coming a lot harder defensively," the head coach said after their game in Pretoria.

"It's good for us, we've now got a game at altitude, guys got an appreciation for that. I thought we worked really hard in those circumstances and we'll be better for it.

"What we know is the intensity levels, the quality that we'll come up against next week, is three, four, fivefold, but we've played reasonably well on tour and we know we need to up the ante."

The All Blacks faced a Bulls side who contained four Springboks with two more added to the bench a day before the encounter.

Rennie was therefore pleased that they were able to produce a dominant display which included some improvement up front, particularly in the scrum.

"50 points against a very good Bulls side is a positive, we played a team that was prepared to play and really took it to us," he said.

"I thought our set-piece was really strong, especially the scrum. I thought from a discipline point of view was a lot better.

"We created so many opportunities with 11 line breaks to one so we probably left a few points out there, which is a little frustrating but I can't fault the effort.

"There will be a number of boys that will be better for the opportunity to run around at altitude."

The scrum dominance was especially notable given the All Blacks' struggles in their first tour match and the threat they will face against the Springboks, but they now look in much better shape.

"I think it's the result of a lot of hard work, a couple of little technical things around the Stormers that we're doing better now so a lot of good work from Jason Ryan and his group," Rennie added.
