The second half turned into a one-sided display. Fermin Lopez, Robert Lewandowski - with two goals - and Raphinha added further strikes as Barcelona capitalised on every mistake, including a costly error at the back that gifted the Brazilian his second.

"They're a world-class side and they punished every single mistake," Howe admitted. "It feels harsh given how much we put into the opening period, but they deserved to go through."

The defeat ends Newcastle's unbeaten European run and leaves Howe facing a crucial final stretch in the Premier League to secure a return to continental football. With a fierce derby against Sunderland looming, the challenge now is to lift his squad quickly after what he described as a painful lesson at the highest level.
