Emile van Heerden credits continuity as Sharks role grows amid Eben Etzebeth absence

The 25-year-old produced one of the moments of the match in the Sharks' 45-0 Vodacom United Rugby Championship win over Munster at Kings Park, finishing a Grant Williams offload to score a try in a dominant display.

Van Heerden, the son of former Springbok forward Fritz van Heerden, has struggled with repeated knee and shoulder injuries since joining the Sharks as a Junior Springbok four years ago, limiting his ability to establish himself despite being highly rated within the squad.

"My career has taken a different path because of things I could not control," he said. "In the past three seasons injuries kept me out for long spells, but this season I've been able to stay on the field and get a good run of game time."

With Etzebeth serving a suspension, Van Heerden has taken on increased responsibility in the second row, including lineout calling duties.

"Pressure might not be the right word. I think it's a responsibility," he said. "As a No. 5 lock and caller, it's your job to run the lineout."

The Sharks' set-piece functioned effectively against Munster, providing a platform for their attack, with Van Heerden crediting the wider squad and coaching staff for their preparation.

"Credit to the coaches and the other players like Jason Jenkins and the lifters. We put in a lot of work," he said. "Having guys like Marvin Orie and Eben here, who have tons of experience, really helps. They sit in meetings and give advice. Warren Whiteley has also been very good with prep."

Van Heerden also acknowledged the influence of his father on his development but said it has not created additional pressure.

"He's played an instrumental role in my career, not only as a coach but as a father," he said. "He gives me an objective opinion. Sometimes those are tough conversations, but they come from a place of support."

The lock is expected to retain his role as the Sharks prepare to face Cardiff at Kings Park on Friday. Cardiff were beaten 40-7 by the Bulls last weekend and currently sit fifth on the log.

"Cardiff are a quality team and you can see that from where they are," Van Heerden said. "We expect them to lift after a tough game."

Van Heerden also reflected on Makazole Mapimpi's 100th appearance for the Sharks, which was marked by two late tries against Munster.

"He means a lot to South African rugby, not just the Sharks," he said. "Reaching 100 games is something to celebrate, and it was special to see him score two tries and make it memorable."
