Kaizer Chiefs promote DDC star Kabelo Nkgwesa to first team
Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly promoted DStv Diski Challenge standout Kabelo Nkgwesa to the senior team as preparations for the new season got underway at Naturena.
In recent seasons, several DDC standouts have departed Chiefs in search of regular top-flight football. Notable among them are Puso Dithejane and Khulimane Ndamane, who joined TS Galaxy, while Omega Mdaka signed with Stellenbosch FC.
Dithejane made 48 appearances for Galaxy in the 2023/24 season, scoring three goals and contributing seven assists. His performances earned him a place in the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2025 COSAFA Cup.
Ndamane also impressed, making 27 appearances after joining Galaxy and receiving a call-up for recent Bafana friendlies.
The trend continued after the 2024/25 campaign with DDC captain Ntandoyenkosi Nkosi and Siphesihle Tati also joining Galaxy.
Khan, who once played a key role in Chiefs' development structures, believes the club needs to urgently improve the pathway from youth to senior level.
"Chiefs is an institution that attracts the best junior talent - no disrespect to Pirates or Sundowns," Khan told FARPost.
"But are they preparing players for the pressure of top-flight football? Look at Mfundo Vilakazi - a top talent, but not a regular. So, there has to be a way of getting players into the senior team.
He pointed to the example of Relebohile Mofokeng, who has thrived at Pirates but came through the School of Excellence.
"No one would want to leave a club like Chiefs without reason. The club needs to find a proper transition model. These kids don't want to be ball boys - they want opportunities."
