West Ham confirm signing of midfielder Mateus Fernandes from Southampton
West Ham have officially announced the signing of Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from Southampton in a deal worth over 40 million pounds.
The 25-year-old right-back, known for his adaptability, arrives to bolster the Green-Whites' defensive options for the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign.
Peter Niemeyer, Werder's head of professional football, expressed enthusiasm about the signing. "We've tracked Isaac for some time, dating back to his days at St. Gallen," Niemeyer said. "His ability to play multiple roles across the flanks adds real depth and flexibility to our squad."
Schmidt, who made 12 appearances for Leeds in the Championship last season, is eager to make an impact in Germany. "I'm thrilled to join Werder and can't wait to get started," Schmidt said. "I believe in the team's ambition, and I'm confident we can achieve great things together."
Recent updates from Werder Bremen's official X account confirmed Schmidt's arrival, with the club posting: "Welcome, Isaac! Our new signing is ready to hit the ground running. #SVW"
Meanwhile, Leeds United's X post wished Schmidt well, stating: "All the best, Isaac, for your loan spell at Werder Bremen. Show them what you're made of!"
The move comes as Werder aim to climb the Bundesliga table, with Schmidt expected to compete for a starting spot immediately. His experience and positional versatility make him a valuable addition to a squad looking to balance defensive solidity with attacking flair.
