Joao Pedro could make Chelsea debut against Palmeiras, confirms manager Enzo Maresca

The Blues meet the Copa Libertadores champions at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, with kickoff scheduled for 2am BST on Saturday morning.

Pedro completed his 60 million pound transfer from Brighton earlier this week and has trained with his new teammates over the past two days. While his match readiness remains in question after an extended summer break, Maresca hinted the 22-year-old could feature off the bench.

"Joao's situation is a bit strange, or different, because he was on holiday," Maresca told reporters. "Even if he was working, it's not the same when you train on your own compared to working with the team.

"But we are very happy with Joao. He's trained well in the last two days. We'll see if we need him - and if there's a chance to give him some minutes, we're going to do that."

The highly rated forward enjoyed an impressive 2023/24 season at Brighton, netting 20 goals in all competitions. His arrival adds further depth to Chelsea's attacking options as Maresca prepares for his first full campaign in charge.

Chelsea will be aiming to secure their place in the Club World Cup semi-finals with a win over Palmeiras, who represent a significant early test in the Maresca era.
