Johan Bakayoko joins RB Leipzig in blockbuster Bundesliga move

The 22-year-old attacking star has penned a five-year deal, tying him to the Red Bulls until 2030.The transfer, announced on Wednesday, sees Leipzig pay a reported 18 million euros upfront, with an additional 4 million euros in potential bonuses, a steal considering Bakayoko's contract with PSV was set to expire in 2026.

This move marks Leipzig's third significant signing of the day, following the arrivals of Yan Diomande and Andrija Maksimovic, signaling their intent to overhaul their attacking options for the 2025/26 Bundesliga season.

Marcel Schafer, Leipzig's sporting director, hailed the acquisition, highlighting Bakayoko's dynamic skill set. "With his power, explosiveness, pace, and eye for goal, he'll improve our play down the right wing," Schafer said. "Leipzig have had Johan Bakayoko on their radar for over two years and repeatedly endeavoured to sign him – we're thrilled he chose us despite strong competition."

Bakayoko, who will wear the number 9 shirt, expressed his excitement about joining Leipzig in a post on X from the club's official account. "I know how much Yussi (Poulsen) means to this club. He's a Leipzig legend. I'll give everything to honour the number 9. I'll always give full throttle, the fans can count on that," he said.

The Belgian international, capped 18 times, brings a wealth of experience despite his young age. At PSV, he contributed 33 goals in 131 appearances, helping them clinch back-to-back Eredivisie titles in 2023/24 and 2024/25, along with two Dutch Cups. His versatility to operate across the forward line, particularly on the right, and his knack for dazzling footwork and pace draw comparisons to Bayern Munich's Michael Olise.

Leipzig's aggressive transfer strategy comes after a disappointing season without European qualification, with new head coach Ole Werner tasked with steering the team back to prominence. Bakayoko's arrival, alongside Diomande and Maksimovic, underscores their ambition to challenge at the top of the Bundesliga.

"I had an immediate feeling that there's a clear plan for me here, and I can bring my strengths to the team," Bakayoko added on X. "Leipzig are a club that develop young players, and that was a key factor in my decision."

The Red Bulls' fans are buzzing with anticipation, with Bakayoko potentially making his debut in a friendly against Meuselwitz on July 19. This signing not only bolsters Leipzig's attacking arsenal but also sends a bold statement to their Bundesliga rivals.
