John Dobson defends Salmaan Moerat as Stormers captain prepares for French move

Dobson confirmed the towering lock has accepted what he called a "massive offer" from French powerhouse La Rochelle, set to take effect at the end of the season.

Dobson said Moerat had been a cornerstone of the Stormers' long-term leadership strategy.

"We didn't want him to leave us. Our plan was for him to be the captain for our Project 2029. He is a massive asset for the Stormers," Dobson told Netwerk24.

The Stormers coach also defended his captain against criticism of his performance and abilities.

"I can't understand why there is such nastiness towards him. He gives 100 million percent on the field and puts his body on the line in every match.

"Last year, we were 12th on the log at one stage and had to win four home games in a row. Do you remember the level of intensity and physical presence he brought?"

Dobson said Moerat's absence was strongly felt when the Stormers lost him early in last season's quarter-final against the Glasgow Warriors.

"Given the physical standard he set, it was huge when we lost him," he said.

Despite the disappointment, the Stormers ultimately chose not to block the move.

"He had an opportunity that will change his and his family's lives," said Dobson.

"We have a relationship with Salmaan where it's not just about contracting. That's why we agreed to his request, but with the door wide open for him to return."
