Makhehleni Makhaula determined to rediscover top form after injury setback

Makhehleni Makhaula determined to rediscover top form after injury setback

The 35-year-old enjoyed a standout campaign last season but suffered a long-term injury in the Nedbank Cup final against Kaizer Chiefs, which sidelined him for much of the first round of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season.

Since returning from injury, Makhaula has featured in several matches ahead of the international break, but he admits getting back to his best will take time.

"I think it's going to be a challenge," Makhaula said.

"But I have my teammates, the medical team and the fitness trainers working hard to help me get back to that level. Playing regularly will help bring my confidence back."

Reflecting on the injury period, the Mohlakeng-born midfielder admitted it was tough being away from the pitch but expressed satisfaction at rejoining the squad.

"It really affected me, I won't lie," he said.

"But I'm getting better every day, and I'm happy to be back in the squad for the remaining games. It's always good to be back."

Makhaula's return saw him help the club lift both the Carling Knockout trophy and the Carling Cup before going into the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) break.

Having missed the preliminary stages of the CAF Champions League, the midfielder will now be aiming to maintain full fitness when Pirates resume league action and enter the group stages of continental competition next year.
