Media frenzy after Bafana Bafana arrive for 2026 FIFA World Cup host clash

The South African squad touched down in Mexico in high spirits following a lengthy journey from Johannesburg that included a two-hour refuelling stop in Cape Verde, according to the South African Football Association (SAFA).

Interest in Bafana Bafana's arrival was evident, with a large media contingent gathered at the airport and outside the team hotel.

Local organisers reportedly indicated that anticipation for the tournament opener is at an all-time high, with South Africa set to face hosts Mexico national football team in the opening match of the World Cup at Estadio Azteca on 11 June.

All players and support staff are now in camp in Pachuca, including team doctor Tshepo Molobi and head performance analyst Sinesipho Mali.

Assistant coach Helman Mkhalele and head of security Mdu Mbatha were the only outstanding members of the delegation. However, both have now secured their US visas and were scheduled to travel to Mexico later on Tuesday.

Bafana Bafana will be based in Pachuca throughout the tournament, with the squad set to train at Universidad del Futbol. The team is staying at Camino Real Pachuca, located on the outskirts of the city.

Coach Hugo Broos and his players were scheduled to hold their first training session on Mexican soil on Tuesday afternoon as preparations begin in earnest for their highly anticipated World Cup campaign.
