Abdeslam Ouaddou embraces high expectations at Orlando Pirates: "I know where I'm putting my feet"
Newly appointed Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says he fully understands the expectations that come with leading one of South African football's most storied clubs, acknowledging that immediate success is non-negotiable.
The 45-year-old former Morocco international joins the Buccaneers following the departure of Jose Riveiro, who enjoyed a successful three-year spell that yielded five domestic trophies and three consecutive CAF Champions League qualifications. Riveiro recently left the Soweto giants to take up the managerial reins at Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly.
Speaking to Pirates TV after being unveiled, Ouaddou expressed both gratitude and clarity on the magnitude of the challenge ahead.
"I'd like to thank the board, the fans, and the staff for the warm welcome. I'm honoured to be part of this institution," he said. “It's not just a club, it's an institution. When I look at the fantastic organisation, the professionalism - Pirates are already in the future.”
Ouaddou's appointment came as a surprise to many, especially given the number of seasoned foreign coaches linked to the job. However, his short but impressive stint with Marumo Gallants - where he steered the struggling club clear of relegation and nearly into the top eight - earned him widespread respect. His 12-match spell included five wins, four draws, and a notable 2-0 victory over Pirates in his very first match in charge.
“I'm not crazy - I know where I am putting my feet,” Ouaddou said. “When you come to such a big club, the only thing that matters is results. The board knows what they want, and I understand that trophies are expected now.”
A former defender who played in top-flight football in France and England, Ouaddou has a diverse coaching resume. He developed youth talent at AS Nancy in France, worked as an assistant with the Algerian national team
