Promising young prop Luqobo Makwedini passes away in France

Makwedini, who was born on 30 June 2006, was contracted to French club AS Beziers Herault at the time of his death. It has been reported that he collapsed at a training session and died later in a hospital in France.

He played in the 2023 FNB U18 Craven Week for the Western Province XV, and a year later was selected for both the SA Schools and U18 'A' squads. The talent was in the same SA U18 'A' squad with a big group of current Junior Springbok players, including Luan Giliomee, Hendre Schoeman, Alzeadon Felix, Samuel Badenhorst, Risima Khosa, Liam van Wyk, Jordan Jooste and Oliver Reid.

"It is with profound sadness that we mourn the untimely passing of Luqobo Makwedini during a training session with his club in France," said SA Rugby president Mark Alexander.

"A former SA U18 prop of immense promise, he had a clear potential for higher honours, as evidenced by his dedication and talent.

"We extend our deepest condolences to his family, who now bear the immeasurable pain of this loss. May they find strength in the love and support of the wider rugby community and comfort in knowing how highly he was regarded.

"Our thoughts are also with his teammates and coaches, who shared in his journey and must now carry his memory forward. This tragedy reminds us of the importance of vigilance during the current European heat wave, where coaches and players must take extra care to safeguard health and well-being.

"Bibo's spirit and contribution will remain an enduring part of our rugby family. May he rest in peace."

Former Springbok Bob Skinstad, current president of AS Beziers Herault, also extended condolences.

"Luqobo joined our academy during the off-season and quickly became a cherished member of the Red and Blue family," read his statement.

"His commitment, kindness, and character left a profound mark on the entire club. During this time of immense pain, AS Beziers Herault stands with his loved ones and offers them our full support.

"We respectfully ask that the club, our players, and Bibo's loved ones be granted the time and privacy needed to grieve during this incredibly difficult period."
