PSL legend Vuyo Mere hangs up his boots after 23-year career

Mere, now 41, spent his final season as a player-coach at TS Galaxy, bringing the curtain down on a career that began in 2001 with Hellenic.

Mere's rise through the ranks saw him sign for Mamelodi Sundowns in 2004, where he enjoyed a highly successful spell until 2011. Defying expectations of a slowdown after his time at Sundowns, Mere went on to complete seven productive seasons at Platinum Stars.

From 2018 onwards, he continued to showcase his skills with Bidvest Wits-where he lifted the league trophy-followed by stints at Moroka Swallows and, ultimately, TS Galaxy.

In an emotional farewell statement, Mere extended his gratitude to fans, supporters, and the entire football community.

"To all the people, fans, supporters and the whole football fraternity at large, I, Vuyo Calvin Mere, wish to extend my deepest and humblest gratitude for the support and love you showed me throughout my career," he wrote on his Instagram account.

Reflecting on his journey, Mere recalled the humble beginnings in the streets of Bloemfontein, where he played for City Leopards, UK Babies, Liverpool FC, Mangaung United, and eventually earned a spot at the Hellenic academy.

"It's been an amazing 23 years of professional football, filled with both great and challenging moments. I just want to thank God for the opportunity, good health, protection, and a willing heart to respect my career and everyone who shared it with me," he continued.

Mere also expressed his appreciation to every team that gave him a platform to shine: Hellenic, Sundowns, Moroka Swallows, Platinum Stars, Bidvest Wits, and TS Galaxy.

"I have won many trophies during my career and played alongside some of the continent's most talented players. It's all because God and my ancestors made it possible, and I am truly grateful," he said.

While last season seemed destined to be his farewell, Mere remained registered as a player while assisting Sead Ramovic's technical team. When Adnan Beganovic took over following Ramovic's resignation, Mere continued to guide the team before making his official retirement announcement.

He also thanked the many coaches who influenced him:

"To all the coaches I worked with, thank you for the lessons. I became a better human being before I became a better footballer because of you all-baie dankie."

Looking ahead to his next chapter, Mere promised to carry forward the values instilled in him throughout his journey.

"I love you all and really appreciate everything. I'll definitely miss playing the beautiful game and what it has meant for me and my family. Ladies and gentlemen, I have officially retired from professional football. It's curtains, my loving, loyal fans. Thank you once again, and see you on the other side."
