RB Leipzig coach Martin Demichelis breaks silence on Yan Diomande transfer saga

The 19-year-old has become one of Europe's most sought-after players following an outstanding season and impressive World Cup campaign, with Real Madrid, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and, more recently, Manchester City all credited with interest.

Speaking after Leipzig's latest pre-season friendly, Demichelis stopped short of guaranteeing the youngster would remain at the club.

"He remains an RB Leipzig player," the Argentine said. "But in football, anything can happen."

His comments contrast with the firmer stance previously taken by sporting director Marcel Schäfer, who insisted Leipzig want Diomande to stay for the 2026-27 campaign.

Transfer speculation surrounding the winger has intensified in recent days. Reports in Germany initially revealed Real Madrid's interest, a move that surprised many given the Spanish giants already have Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe competing for places on the left flank.

Madrid are reportedly among the clubs to have seen a 100 million euros offer rejected, with Liverpool also believed to have failed with a bid of the same value. Paris Saint-Germain are said to have reached an agreement in principle with the player, although negotiations between the clubs have yet to produce a deal.

Manchester City have also entered the race, further increasing the likelihood that Diomande's future will dominate the remainder of the transfer window.

Despite the growing list of suitors, Leipzig are refusing to lower their demands. The German club are understood to be directing interested teams towards the player's 130 million euros release clause and are not expected to entertain offers below that figure.

Diomande's performances last season explain the level of interest. He registered 12 goals and eight assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances, directly contributing to 20 goals. Only Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Luis Diaz, Deniz Undav and Christoph Baumgartner recorded more goal involvements in the league.

The winger also topped the Bundesliga charts for successful dribbles with 118 - 50 more than any other player - and led the division in take-on-ending carries with 104.

He carried that form onto the international stage, starring for Ivory Coast at the World Cup, where he became only the second African player on record since 1966 to complete at least 10 dribbles and create 10 chances during a single group stage, matching a feat previously achieved only by South Africa's Quinton Fortune in 2002.

While Leipzig continue to insist Diomande remains their player, Demichelis' remarks suggest the club are realistic about the possibility of losing one of Europe's brightest young talents before the new season begins.
