Sanju Samson considered for leadership role at Chennai Super Kings

Sanju Samson considered for leadership role at Chennai Super Kings

The former Rajasthan Royals captain, who spent over a decade as the face of that franchise, arrives at CSK in strong form and with a reputation for calm, anchoring batting.

His departure marks the end of an era at Rajasthan, but also the beginning of a new chapter in a setup known for valuing stability and experience.

While Ruturaj Gaikwad remains captain, CSK's leadership structure has shown signs of fragility in recent seasons due to injuries and transitional phases.

Samson is now viewed internally as a figure capable of reinforcing that framework, with discussions around a possible vice-captaincy role already gaining traction.

Former India captain Anil Kumble has endorsed Samson as a natural leadership fit, citing his extensive captaincy experience and temperament.

"I think that's the perfect role for Sanju, handling those responsibilities almost like a vice-captain. He has captained Rajasthan for a long period of time, so that leadership role comes naturally to him," Kumble said.

However, Mohammad Kaif has urged caution, suggesting the franchise will prioritise easing him into the environment before assigning major responsibilities.

Beyond leadership, Samson could eventually take over wicketkeeping duties, further aligning with CSK's traditional template. With succession planning underway, the franchise appears intent on integrating him gradually, positioning him as both a stabilising presence and a future leader.
