Sharks lock in Bok veterans Vincent Koch and Bongi Mbonambi until 2028

Koch, the veteran tighthead prop, has signed a contract extension until 2028, fending off interest from English clubs including Sale Sharks and Bath. Hooker Mbonambi has also extended his deal to 2028.

Bath were reportedly particularly keen to acquire Koch's services, with director of rugby Johann van Graan viewing him as a potential replacement for Thomas du Toit, who is set to return to Durban.

The 63-cap Test veteran previously joined Wasps before the English club went into administration.

Despite renewed English interest, Koch has opted to remain with the Sharks, who also secured young lock Coetzee le Roux until 2027 and loose forward Matt Romao until 2029.

The double World Cup winner spoke recently of the culture taking shape in Durban under new coach JP Pietersen and how it has boosted their levels of enjoyment on the field.

"I think the change is that we just play for each other," he said.

"When coach JP came in, he spoke about what the jersey means and to play for each other. We're starting to build a nice culture of caring for each other. For us, it's about being closer to one another: if we're closer off the field, you'll fight harder on the field.

"You can clearly see the boys are fighting, chasing seemingly lost causes and you can see the love for each other.

"That's been a stand-out thing, you can see the enjoyment and freedom the boys are playing with, they're playing without fear because there's no pressure on players.
