Bok flyer Edwill van der Merwe determined to make every chance count
Springbok Edwill van der Merwe has a chance to shine on the wing against Scotland in the Nations Championship at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

The two-time World Cup champions remain heavy favourites in their Highveld fortress, where altitude and passionate home support create a notoriously difficult environment for visiting sides.
Scotland, buoyed by a strong win over Argentina, will look to build on recent progress and cause an upset on South African soil for the first time in their history - but it's not going to be an easy task.
Nations Championship 2026 – Round 2
Date: Saturday, 11 July 2026
Venue: Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria
Kick-off: 17:40
Referee: Pierre Brousset (France)
Form
South Africa: Coming off a dominant victory over England at Ellis Park to open their campaign. Rassie Erasmus has heavily rotated his squad for their second match of the competition to test combinations and squad depth while maintaining high standards. The Boks have won their last 11 Tests in a run stretching back to August 2025 and will be determined to continue it against Scotland.
Scotland: Secured an impressive win over Argentina in their opening fixture of the Nations Championship. Gregor Townsend’s side has shown attacking flair and resilience but faces a massive step up in physicality and altitude against the Boks. This is their first Test in South Africa since 2014, adding to the challenge - especially at altitude.
Team News & Lineups
South Africa - 15 Aphelele Fassi, 14 Edwill van der Merwe, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Damian Willemse, 11 Canan Moodie, 10 Handre Pollard, 9 Embrose Papier, 8 Evan Roos, 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit (c), 6 Paul de Villiers, 5 Ruan Nortje, 4 Cobus Wiese, 3 Wilco Louw, 2 Johan Grobbelaar, 1 Boan Venter.

Only five players retain starting spots from the England win. Pieter-Steph du Toit captains in Siya Kolisi’s continued absence, with Handre Pollard returning at fly-half and Embrose Papier earning a rare start after a superb United Rugby Championship campaign. The pack features plenty of fresh faces but looks powerful all the same.
Scotland - 15 Kyle Rowe, 14 Kyle Steyn (vc), 13 Rory Hutchinson, 12 Sione Tuipulotu (c), 11 Jamie Dobie, 10 Finn Russell, 9 Ben White, 8 Jack Dempsey, 7 Rory Darge (vc), 6 Matt Fagerson, 5 Scott Cummings, 4 Gregor Brown, 3 Zander Fagerson, 2 Ewan Ashman, 1 Pierre Schoeman.
Replacements: 16 Gregor Hiddleston, 17 Rory Sutherland, 18 Will Hurd, 19 Alex Samuel, 20 Josh Bayliss, 21 Magnus Bradbury, 22 Tom Jordan, 23 Stafford McDowall.
Finn Russell returns at fly-half after returning from a calf injury, with Zander Fagerson and Gregor Brown promoted to the starting pack. Scotland have opted to match the Boks' 6-2 bench split to combat the expected fatigue at altitude up front.
Key Battles
Back Row - There will be a war at the breakdown. Scotland will be looking for quick, clean ball to unleash Finn Russell while the Springboks will do everything in their power to slow things down and try affect turnovers.
Half-Back Control - At altitude, accurate kicking and territory management are crucial. Pollard’s boot gives South Africa an edge, while Russell is Scotland’s primary attacking threat.
Aerial Contest - High balls travel further in the thin air at altitude and with the Boks having so many Bulls in their lineup, they will have an experience advantage in the conditions. South Africa have also made a habit of dominating the aerial game and are lethal in the air and on the counter. Scotland's back three will have to be at their best to compete aerially and look for space on the edges.
Head-to-head & Venue
South Africa dominate the series, having won 25 of the 30 meetings between the two nations and the last nine encounters in a row, with Scotland's last victory over the Springboks coming back in 2010.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two sides in Pretoria at Loftus Versfeld, a venue where the Boks are formidable due to altitude and zealous home support. They have played six Tests in South Africa, with the Springboks having won every one.
Overall Strategic Matchups
Boks' Plan - Dominate the set-piece and collisions, use altitude to wear down Scotland, control territory with Pollard's kicking, and unleash pace in the back three.
Scotland's Plan - Secure early set-piece parity and quick ball at the breakdown to use Russell's vision to keep the Boks on the back foot.
Key Matchups
This heavyweight clash sees the Springboks’ forward power and home advantage as the likely deciders, but Scotland’s attacking quality offers hope for competitiveness.
Tight five
SA: Boan Venter, Johan Grobbelaar, Wilco Louw, Cobus Wiese, Ruan Nortje
Scotland: Pierre Schoeman, Ewan Ashman, Zander Fagerson, Gregor Brown, Scott Cummings
The Springboks possess one of the most feared scrums in world rugby. Their tight five boasts four Bulls players who have plenty of experience at Loftus and, backed by a powerful back row, will generate massive pressure on the Scottish scrum.
Scotland’s experienced front row has been bolstered by Fagerson’s return from injury and is a solid unit but will face severe challenges in the thin air against an elite Springbok pack. Scrum parity is essential for Scotland to have any chance as dominance in this area will hand the Boks control of the game.
Back Row
SA: Paul de Villiers, Pieter-Steph du Toit (c), Evan Roos
Scotland: Rory Darge (vc), Matt Fagerson, Jack Dempsey
Du Toit remains one of the world’s best all-round flankers, boasting elite tackling, ball carrying, and leadership abilities. The Boks’ balanced and destructive unit excels in collisions, with Roos and De Villiers set to compete at the breakdown.
Scotland’s high-work-rate trio of Darge, Fagerson and Dempsey is dynamic and breakdown-focused. They must create turnovers and slow down the Boks’ ball, as well as preventing the same when they have possession to disrupt South Africa's rhythm and give Russell quick possession.
Outside of Du Toit, the Springboks back row does lack experience at international level and Scotland could well gain an advantage here if they play their cards right.
Aerial Battle
SA: Aphelele Fassi, Edwill van der Merwe, Canan Moodie
Scotland: Kyle Rowe, Kyle Steyn, Jamie Dobie
Both sides boast explosive pace out wide, but the Boks’ finishing ability and aerial strength in Highveld conditions provide a clear advantage. The high ball and contested kicks are going to cause a lot of problems for Scotland, who will be looking for counter-attacking opportunities through Rowe and Dobie.
Prediction
The combination of Springbok forward dominance, significant rotation management and Loftus altitude makes South Africa strong favourites. Scotland can compete through clever play and bench impact, potentially keeping it competitive early if they can control the breakdowns, but the Springboks will be disappointed with anything other than a decisive win.
