Relebohile Mofokeng’s rise powered by parental belief and sacrifice

Mofokeng was only 13 when he left home to pursue his dream, a decision his parents made with a heavy heart but clear vision. Looking back, The Pirates star’s mother Naomi, says the sacrifice was worth it—her son has grown into one of South Africa’s brightest football talents and a national fan favourite.

“The hardest decision I ever made was sending Rele to boarding school when he was just 13,” Naomi shared in Adidas’ “Plus One Effect” campaign, which highlights stories of athletes and the people behind their success.

“He could’ve stayed in our kasi (township) and gone to a local school, but I knew the right opportunities were further away. I only saw him once a month for five years. It broke me, but it’s a sacrifice I had to make so he could have a better future.”

Now a rising star with the Buccaneers and earning admiration across the country, Mofokeng remains grounded by the unwavering support of his family.

“Having both my parents by my side is a privilege. They motivate and encourage me, and they’ve always believed in me—through the wins and the losses. I want to make them proud, because they’ve always been there for me, and I’ll always be there for them,” he said.

Mofokeng’s story is a powerful reminder of the role family plays in shaping greatness—not just on the field, but in life.
